Problem: NAND Bit Errors Impact Production on Programming
Solution: BERT (Bit Error Rate Tolerance) for NAND

Recent trends in the NAND manufacturing process have lead to a dramatic increase in the number of “bit flips” or “bit errors” in the latest generation of high-density NAND flash. Bit errors that occur during programming pose a major problem for most “off-line” flash programming solutions.

When a bit flips during programming the device will fail verify. Faced with unacceptably high fallout rates due to verify failures, some have resorted to disabling verify. This is a practice BPM Microsystems would never endorse, as it will inevitably lead to flawed devices being released to production.

BPM Microsystems solves the bit error problem with Flashstream®. Flashstream utilizes BERT, a patent pending process included in BPWin.

BERT allows users to set the maximum number of bit errors they will allow on each page of the device. Flashstream efficiently calculates the number of bit errors per page during the verify process.

The BERT value can be set not to exceed the number of bit errors the target system’s ECC (Error Correction Code) will allow. This solution provides high production yields of verified devices without impacting the throughput speed of Flashstream programmers.
