Device can be secured in 3 modes (Mode 2 Mode 3 or Mode 4) Once device is secured in Mode 3 or Mode 4 during EPV Standalone Verify and Compare operations will fail. This indicates that the device has been secured. If a device is secured using Mode 2 during EPV device is secured such that no further program can be done without erase. So device will fail verify if further programming is attempted without an erase.
